Students - Stop Drowning Now

Learn about who we are and our mission.

Learn about why educating about drowning prevention is important.

STUDENTS

Ensuring our community is aware of the risks of drowning and how to prevent it IS NOT just for adults.

By setting up a Stop Drowning Now High School Club within your institution, students are given the opportunity to participate in water safety assemblies, storyboard presentations, story book readings, or establish water safety tables at various events. This meaningful involvement contributes significantly to the enhancement of community water safety even before being able to vote. It is up to you and emerging generations to take action and make positive change. Get excited, get involved by starting a club today!

We offer Stop Drowning Now curriculum, FREE for all community members! Help us educate children and communities about drowning prevention and water safety. Together we will reduce drownings.

WE CAN END DROWNING IN OUR LIFETIME.

Public awareness and education focused on young children is the most powerful tool to prevent fatal and non-fatal drowning.

HIGH SCHOOL CLUBS

Bring SDN to your school! Stop Drowning Now provides the tools necessary for students to be successful in their communities so that the club participants may focus on providing effective drowning prevention education within their communities.

The Three Opportunities Include:

    1. Attendance and representation of Stop Drowning Now at local community events.
    2. School presentations to local elementary school children with their communities.
    3. Participation in one regional event annually to raise awareness of the risks of drowning.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

A recent Red Cross survey finds 61% of children, including more than half of all teens, can’t perform basic swim safety skills. The survey found that nearly all parents (94%) expect that their children will engage in some sort of water activity this summer. However, nearly two-thirds (61%) of these parents report that their child cannot demonstrate all five basic skills that could save their lives in the water. Of these, 65% are parents of children (ages 4-12) and 51% are parents of teens (ages 13-17).

These critical water safety skills, also known as “water competency,” are the ability to, in this order: step or jump into the water over your head; return to the surface and float or tread water for one minute; turn around in a full circle and find an exit; swim 25 yards to the exit; and exit from the water. If in a pool, be able to exit without using the ladder.
